The town of Fort Mill is currently in the preliminary design phase of renovating the old downtown movie theater on Main Street. Through a public/private partnership, the town is working to adapt the existing theater into a multi-use space for the town. The proposed layout shown in this brochure reflects a flexible seating layout of up to 212 chairs, including handicap accessible seating, on the main level. This level can also be organized with restaurant style tables and chairs at the back of the theater for a seating layout of 168 chairs and 36 seats at the bar and table areas. The balcony plan is shown with 93 fixed, theater-style seats for a total seating capacity of around 300 seats in the building. Originally a single room theater, the renovated building will contain an expanded program to attract a wider range of potential users. The stage has been expanded to nearly 475 SF; new restroom facilities will be provided on both floors along with a concessions area on the first floor. The building will also have a new entry plaza on the Academy Street side which features the new ticket office and covered entry. The town is planning to use the theater for musical performances, movie screenings, theater productions, and other events.
The town is currently pursuing the possibility of grant money and has formed the Fort Mill Arts Commission to help coordinate the theater restoration efforts. There will also be a fund-raising campaign in the coming months to help raise money for the theater project. If you would like more information about the theater restoration, or if you would like to make a donation to the restoration fund please contact the Fort Mill Arts Commission, c/o David Hudspeth, at 112 Confederate Street, Fort Mill, SC 29715 (803-547-2116 / dhudspeth@fortmillsc.org).
